ELK LAKES - March 17

Leaving the Elk Pass parking lot at 9:15 am, we were blessed with stunning knife-edge trackset ski conditions on Fox Creek and the Elk Pass trails, as mentioned by others. Likely the best I have seen in 30+ years. We skied to the Elk Lakes ACC cabin via West Elk Pass, following a well-defined skier track in dry snow. From the hut, we pursued our route over 10-15 cm of snow that had fallen on a previous ski trail to Lower and Upper Elk Lakes. We had lunch by the big lake in the sun, witnessing numerous avalanches from Mt Fox, on either side of the frozen ice falls above the lake; quite a show. The return to the hut was much faster, as we were skiing on a well packed trail by a group of 5 staying at the hut. The climb back up under the power line was a bit tedious, slipping back; we did not bother putting the short skins. Back on the Elk Pass trail made it a nice finish and glide for a great day of 27.5 km return.

Indeed, it was a fantastic day. You passed our group of 4 Ramblers at the Elk Lakes cabin at our lunch stop. We had great views at Lower Elk Lake. Next time I'll have to try the Upper Elk Lake extension. Very inspiring trip report.
