Participants:

Mr. Legalize Real Democracy on 60mm x 205c Madshus Voss metal edge skis waxed with Swix green.

Discussion:

The Minnewanka Road trackset is fairly worn and is blown in with snow in some locations. Nice winter like snow. Moderate to moderately fast snow.

The Cascade Trail trackset is a little worn but still reasonably useful or good. Some bad etiquette skate skiers did some damage to the classic tracks unnecessarily. My Swix green wax performed variably as the snow temperatures varied. Beyond the bridge I skied a couple of hills where the wax slipped going up. The smog diffused sun was pretty warm and the shade was pretty cool. Skiing back at night the snow was moderately fast.

I stopped at the Stoney Warden Cabin in the afternoon. The temperature was -2c. Someone left an awful lot of bread crumbs on the picnic table and other stuff which was attracting birds and mice. This was technically illegal and very bad backcountry etiquette. Leaving food like that is an animal attractant and it can be dangerous to others. This is the first time I have seen something like this. Skiers certainly do not need bird and mouse poop on the picnic table. I cleaned things off somewhat.

From Stoney Creek to Flints Park I rebroke the trail. Ski penetration was about 1/2 way up the boots. The trail breaking was moderately difficult as animals walked in the old snow filled ski trail and left crusty paw prints. I followed putty cat prints for many miles until I got too low on water supplies about 1.5 km from Cuthead Warden Cabin. 3 litres of packed ski water and 4 oranges was not enough hydration for me on this trail breaking trip even with cold temperatures. The air quality was not great but improved further up the valley late in the day. I certainly felt the impacts of the smog. It was not picture perfect conditions due to the light smog. It was not long ago that smog was unheard of in the mountains in winter.

I skied back at night to the Stoney Warden Cabin. At about 10 pm when I left the cabin, the temperature was -16C with a good stiff breeze.
