Discussion:

The three of us decided to try skiing up to Lake O'Hara today. We were able to ski from just above the gate, and the coverage was pretty good until the 5km mark. The snow was pretty rough from snowshoers and walkers. Then there were a few long-ish (>100m) sections of bare road that we had to walk. After that, the snow came back and there were fewer footprints. The snowmobile track was solid enough to ski on, but the sides of the road were isothermal. There is one tree down across the road. We were able to ski over it where the snowmobiles had gone over, but this might not be possible when more snow melts. Not an issue on the way up, but something to keep in mind on the way down as it is at the bottom of a steep section. We skied to the edge of the lake by the lodge, but the lake looked quite wet around the edges and we didn't want to risk skiing on it. We only had one crash on the way down when Trevor tried to snowplow off the snowmobile track and lost control in the deeper snow. In most places, the snow was slow enough that aggressive snowplowing wasn't necessary and being confined to the snowmobile track was not as scary as we thought it would be. There was a lot of meltage during our ski, and this trip will probably be less of a ski and more of a walk pretty soon.
