Grooming Update: Lake Louise Area

Discussion:

Today I talked to Jeff H, the Backcountry Maintenance coordinator at Lake Louise for an update on grooming.

He said they may start machine packing Moraine Lake Road and the Great Divide when 20 cm of snow has accumulated.

Understandably, he's cautious about beginning too early, as the sleds and equipment may otherwise become damaged. He explained the equipment has to last all winter, so it's best to be cautious.

How much snow has fallen in the area so far? It sounded like quite a bit was supposed to fall in the past few days.

Ski Louise reports 16cm of snow at the ski hill base the last 48 hr. I would think similar amounts fell on MLR. Based on the LL groomer comments they probably want one more good snowfall before they pack MLR or Great Divide, assuming they don't lose any snow to warm weather in between.

Here is a current map showing snow cover of about 10 cm in the Lake Louise area.

I attached a live link to the Ventusky map website so you can follow it. This can be found under the Weather Reports link in this site.

There are also numerous webcam links available under Webcams... .
