Hello Haywire / Bruce,
Many thanks for your comment, always very useful to get some context.
Many thanks also for all these years volunteering. I know a few groomers and always stop to say hello, that being said It would be nice to have an « appreciation / recognition day » where skiers could meet the groomers, summer BBQ?
Take care
Jean-Francois

I posted elsewhere about being ok with groomed only on Telephone, but my observation today has made me re-think that. I addition to providing for better skiing, having a single trackset to one side appeared to serve as a guideline for non-ski traffic, keeping them to the other side and preserving a lane of good ski conditions.

I'll add some context to Telephone loop. I started and ran the volunteer track setting at WBC for 7 years. At that time, Telephone east was turned into winter multi-use, since walkers and snowshoers would access it from snowshoe hare. Subsequently, fat biking access was included as they would ride east telephone up to Disconnect. However, the intent was that the winter multi-use would be temporary, and that an all season trail would be built alongside the winter ski trail, so that Telephone could revert back to ski trail, only. Obviously, this did not happen, and that plan fell off the table. Which brings us to where we are today, with many walkers on the ski trail - no doubt many more because of Covid.

Which then brings us to Trails 2.0 plan. I don't agree that Telephone should be converted over to a backcountry trail for ski touring. In my 7 years, I only ever had 1 person request that we do not trackset Telephone. Additionally, in the consultation period for 2.0, there was only 1 person request it as a backcountry trail. Finally, without packing and grooming, the snow would rarely be deep enough, or remain deep enough, to be skiable. 2.0 plan should implement what was orginally agreed between BCT and Parks -- to make a multi-use trail aligning alongside Telephone, to at least the junction of Tom Snow north.

Respectfully, Bruce Barker

This from Groomer David at BCT:

Our approach to Telephone has changed.

Because Tele is multi-use, the east in particular receives heavy traffic from walkers, snowshoers and bikers - all with a significant negative impact on ski grooming.

With the development of the WBC trail plan 2.0, we are looking at making Telephone a backcountry ski route with minimal or possibly no grooming.

For this year, we have been trialing this approach. We have been roller packing the larger snowfalls but haven't been setting track. The idea is that Telephone might be a destination for experienced skiers interested in a longer ski on touring or light AT gear.

Any suggestions on Telephone Loop are very welcome!

Telephone will get some love before the weekend - keep an eye on Nordic Pulse.

Howdy,
I am surprised to see that Telephone loop has not been groomed / roller packed although there is plenty of snow.

Does anyone know if it's just a matter of priority for the groomers, hence I just need to be patient or it's a « deliberate » choice as it's a multi-use trail with less traffic than any other trail in WBC, hence not worth the time and effort.

Cheers
Jean-Francois
