Once the temperatures moderated in the mountains I decided to hit one my early season favourites. It was -23º in Calgary when I left and -13º in the Burstall Parking lot at 10am. Warmed up to -9º, no wind, nice and sunny so great conditions for first backcountry day out. 40cm at the trailhead and the trail is nicely packed by skis and snowshoes for a few kms, then skier packed all the way up. The headwall is in good shape, both up and down. I measured 86 cm depth in the upper meadow below Burstall Pass, nicely consolidated and supportive. I dug another pit high up on a mellow slope below the pass, east aspect. Here the snow was 65cm and I did get a resistant planar result on a column test at 17 hits. Check the MIN for details. Pretty tight snowpack so far, not too deep though so you need to keep your rock radar turned on.
