Discussion:

As described in Part 1, I had to find another ski destination before returning to my car. I felt skiing to Assiniboine was overkill, so I settled for Karst Spring. I had never been there in winter and was curious to check it out. Also, I wanted to test out some prototype skin extensions I had rigged up for my skin skis to handle steeper trails. First stop was Watridge Lake.

Total distance: 33.30 Km

Watridge Lake

The Karst Spring trail is only 1.2km, but well worth the visit. Soon after crossing the outlet of Watridge Lake you encounter the creek fed by the spring. It was lush with bright green moss covered rocks. There's even a resident snowman to guide you on your way.

Continuing further up the trail, you catch your first sight of the source.

Follow the green moss upstream. The spring source is the bare rock at the uppermost moss.

The trail continues all the up to the spring.

After checking my watch to confirm compliance with MaSid's ski-to-drive ratio, I headed down to Watridge Lake and back to the car. The trail was still holding firm with about 1cm of soft snow on top.

What a great expedition, and lovely pictures!
Did you really ski up that mess to the Karst Spring??

Diana - I was afraid I'd have to do that, but the snowman directed me up a nice trail to climber's right. It's improved a lot since I was last there many years ago. It even has railings.

Just for clarity (on my personal ski guidelines), I meant “ski” faster, not “drive” faster. Aka: Get more of a workout benefit for energy expended getting there. Not a hard and fast rule based on time alone, a guideline. Of course, I would never suggest driving twice the speed limit to make it work. Nonetheless, a good little side excursion that we then got to see. FYI though, my car is fairly fuel efficient, so i ski slower and enjoy all of it. (-;
