Well MaSid, I took the zip-offs off while switching from bike to skis… of course I ended up with a sunburn while I skied from the snow reflection!

Imagine skiing through actual mashed potatoes: heavy, wet, sticky. Once it goes through a few melt freeze cycles, might get some corn snow after it settles out if the timing is right, especially over top of a seasons worth or grooming.

Ziggy, Lila and I had another great day skiing. Hostel loop was much faster than when we did it on Wednesday with Alf, thanks to the lovely and thoughtful sign collectors packing it so nicely yesterday. Everyone we met today had ear to ear smiles on their faces, what a great way to spend a May-day. Thanks for the great photo of Team Stardust all locked and loaded in their crates Roger!

Alf, thanks for your trail report. After seeing it we headed out to WBC early on Friday morning and skied from 8:30 to 11:00 on lower Hostel, Mountain Road and Middle Crystal. Conditions at 8:30 were solid and crunchy. We were able to ski on the crust at Hostel Meadow with no penetration (62mm skis). We stayed off the steep hills, but by 10:00 the trails were softening up and were in great shape (for May). Also thanks to the gentleman on the Bobcat UTV who used a roller while out doing other duties.

Great to run into you on West Crystal Line, Roger.
I made a set of tracks on parts of West Crystal, Crystal Links 2 & 4, Loggers, Sundog and East Crystal Line... so there are some tracks to follow.
By late afternoon, the new snow had settled to about 25cm on picnic tables (which had some residual heat from yesterday), but I consistently measured 30cm of new snow on the previous snow base. On single track trails, which were bare dirt yesterday, the snow had settled and melted down to 15cm. So, it is best to stick to trails that have a snow base underneath.
One bit of good news is that the highways and roads were cleared of snow, right to the parking lot, so driving was very straightforward.

Another outcome: Prairie mountain trail is due to open May 1. The closure is likely to be extended until the recent storm snow melts and the new trail dries out.

That sounds like an optimistic forecast. Regardless, likely warm temps and some wet snow except up high maybe. We will see. Time to pay attention to the weather stations and maybe get out early.

Great news about the Highway #66 gate being moved. That never did make sense in the first place.
Perfect timing for your scouting trip... it looks like we'll get 25-35cm of new snow in that area starting Monday night... around 45-50 at Ribbon Creek and as much as 60cm in the Elk Pass area

Just for clarity (on my personal ski guidelines), I meant “ski” faster, not “drive” faster. Aka: Get more of a workout benefit for energy expended getting there. Not a hard and fast rule based on time alone, a guideline. Of course, I would never suggest driving twice the speed limit to make it work. Nonetheless, a good little side excursion that we then got to see. FYI though, my car is fairly fuel efficient, so i ski slower and enjoy all of it. (-;

Yes Diana, the trail starts up through the trees. We did use skins on the way up, which makes it easy on the well worn trail. It is a bit of a pain on the return without skins, because the trail undulates. However, the spectacular scenery and good snow once out of the trees makes it all well worthwhile.

Great to read your report from the Robertson valley. The crust in the valley looks fine for skate skiing. But going back out on the crunchy trail on skinny skate skis after exiting the Burstall Lakes could be tricky. Once the weather changes to rain/snow showers the crust will become breakable. Time is of the essence.

This former "diehard" has been enjoying a good start to the biking season, riding from home in warm sun wearing shorts and tee shirts (mostly). Most years I am keen to ski well into April, often May, but haven't been feelin' it lately. See you in November!

Indeed. It was so lovely I went back in there on Friday for the third day in a row. I must say, I had more fun in those 3 days than I did in the first 3 months of my season.
I'm sure everyone is getting sick of these gopro vids but this run on Friday was a real hoot!

Excellent perseverance. Beware of twiggy early season hazards or low snow years with the new skis, those skin grooves can be grabby. Low odds, but shocking results.

When I got home yesterday I had a look at the post-ski data and discovered I had skied right past some fine open slopes--potential terrain for turns! Since I possess a keen sensibility for such things this came as quite a shock. My only recourse was to return to the area today and make amends.
Great powder turns were had! Snow quality and travel conditions remain excellent. As others have pointed out, for here and surrounding areas that should be the case for a couple more days.

Any two for one deals on knees? I could use an improvement (also likely too much trail breaking and descending unforgiving snow this season).
The warranty is not up in terms of timing, but over on the mileage.

Fish scales ulrike. Good grip throughout the day and no clumping. I switchbacked up the boundary cut line as I don’t have full length skins for my LT skis.
P.S. this is the first time this season that I have done the traverse on LT gear.

Thanks, Helen. Good luck with your hip replacement. I'm getting a knee replacement in mid-May, perhaps due to excessive trailbreaking? I was originally planning to include Lookout on my trip, but my knee wasn't up for it. In any case, it turns out someone else had broken trail up there.

Love the creative name of your "Six Picnic Table Tour" and photos; I am guessing with all that rigorous trail-breaking, you needed sustenance at each one. I sure hope I can do such a tour after my upcoming hip replacement early May. As many know, I LOVE breaking trail!!! Congrats Mike W.
It would be a very nice spot to have another picnic table at the north end of Hydroline before it curves around and goes down the steep hill. Nice viewpoint there.

On my way down the Elk Pass trail today I saw one XC ski track heading up the Elk Pass trail and up Patterson, but no down track. So figured the person must have come down Hydroline. I guess it was you!

As a general personal rule, gotta ski at least twice as long as the drive in order to balance health benefits with energy consumption, take at least one other person with you, or ski twice as fast. Unless of course using the one time allowable annual exemption for potential last ski day (we achieved the goals already over the year and did it just for happiness).

You definitely got better weather than expected Roger. Seems only right to follow some of those tracks tomorrow. Doesn’t look too deep though if sticking to the recent grooming. Meadows should be good with a decent crust with dust. Thanks for the report!

Better late than never, as they say, or Le der des ders. That icy hill looked unappealing, but no match for fresh scrisp fishscale edges. The entry to west elk pass needs some work. There is a tree down across the route near the beginning and the initial little trees have grown a bit over the years. A better entry now just 20-30 ft south. Could do with an appropriate entry feature to mark the spot instead of tape.

Great to hear, Chuck. We were at Chester Lake last Sunday. Supportive base but very heavy snow on top due to the wet, warm weather and no overnight freeze.
Sounds like the weather is giving us another chance for skiing. And crust skiing (with skate skis) should be coming up soon, as long as we get some sunny days and freeze overnight.

The snow everywhere was totally light. If only I had my Tua skis I would have enjoyed great turns (but it would have taken longer to get there).
The tour is so enjoyable now that the freeze thaw cycle has been around for a while… totally supportive with fresh snow on top.

Hi Barry: agree, skiing at CNC at this time of year can be a real "hit and miss" game. I skate skied there last Saturday with wet snow falling and it was a huge effort to get any glide. Skied today after work at 4:30pm and had a more pleasant skate ski in soft snow on recent grooming on Rundle and Meadowview at a slow pace. Not many skiers out so no big ruts. Classic tracks looked fine, but you'd want fishscale skis. Even the biathlon loop (Lynx) was alright. Overcast sky seems to help keep the snow in better shape.

Nice to have the right gear for those conditions! I also found the skiing to be pretty good, for a +11C day. No sticking or clumping and pretty decent glide with fish scale skis. My tour included Sundog, Boundary Horse trail, a descent via a cut-block to Iron Springs, Sundog, West Crystal and Middle Crystal Line.

The problem today is isothermal snow… with no overnight freeze. The problem right now is snow quality, since we are at the start of a melt-freeze cycle, with more melt than freeze. The skier set track would be just as difficult on steep hills as a groomed single track, if you are on skinny skis in melt-freeze conditions.
Hopefully next year, we get consistent snow falls. With new snowmobiles and the new Bobcat, Bragg Creek Trails will have the resources to do more regular grooming of Telephone Loop next winter.

Excellent! With the dense or refrozen snow, that snowbike track is now likely very challenging if not terrifying on many of the downhills for those on xc equipment. I only made it to Telephone once this season instead of an average of 3 times. Hopefully next season will see more regular ski grooming on this gem of a trail.

The fat bike grooming typically goes from Snowy Owl (south of Mountain Road) to Moose Single Track-Merlin-Braggin Rights- Reconnect. To get there, they normally go up Old Shell Road when Bragg Creek is frozen over and Moose Connector is groomed for XC skiiing. However, the ice bridge is now gone from Bragg Creek, so Old Shell Road is no longer an option. So, they went up Moose Connector to get to Moose Single Track.

It's not a new trail, just upgrading the existing Tom Snow. That will people to make a loop with proposed trail #7 and West Meadow, as well as proposed trails # 15 and #16.

MaSid and Diana... the good news about that short, but crazy steep bit on Tom Snow is that the new West Bragg Creek Trails Master Plan includes a proposal to re-design that section so that it is less steep and safe for most people to use all year round.

My season was a bit of a mixed bag. I had some of the most epic skis (a great Goat Creek day with JeffG and Kim; a freshly groomed climb up Lookout; a few great Pipestone days; many times back and forth across Tyrwhitt; checking out Emerald Lake and Kicking Horse trails with my hubby for the first time) but because I was working closer to full time this winter after having started a private practice, I had significantly less time for skiing than I would have liked. When combined with the roller coaster ski conditions, it was a strange season…I only made it out to WBC once this whole year! I’m looking forward to hopefully one last chance to enjoy the trails, as well as whatever next year has in store. It was great connecting with many of you this season and being part of this great community!

You can follow that Tom Snow trail all the way south to mountain rd. The hill that was hiked is short lived. Then rolling/flattish terrain, a few short moderate hills, similar to fox creek. Best done in cold powder conditions with LT gear depending on travel. Ungroomed, but seeing more skier travel lately.

This season was better than I anticipated given the El Nino situation. With such inconsistent conditions this year, it was more important than ever for me to be able to follow the grooming. Nordic Pulse was very valuable in deciding where I was going to ski that day. So many people have to invest several hours of driving and associated costs that it becomes more important for Parks Canada to implenent Nordic Pulse. One of Parks Canada's bywords is "enhancing visitor experience". Hopefully they are listening. So, until then, I depend on skierroger.ca and the eager reporters. One last thing, after today's experience at PLPP, Santa will definitely bring me a pair of skin skis next year!

Thank you Skier Roger for everything you do, including starting this interesting thread. I have had a fantastic ski season so far, despite not getting to many of the usual spots because of conditions. I skied Cascade more than ever, and I just can’t get enough of that place! There is something about climbing that big hill and reaching the mellow plateau which always has excellent conditions that soothes my soul. I can’t understand why that place held it together so well in a year where all the other spots had such ups and downs. The highlight for me was a week of skiing in early March with our friends from Gatineau, sampling all the great spots in the best conditions of the year. In addition, I had several great skis with my lifelong ski partner Sam, but not nearly enough skis with my daughter ErinP and Claire and none with Helen. And finally, having our grandson Finnie (Erin’s) make it up to the meadow at PLPP for the first time was pure joy. He rocked that day, perfecting his downhill tuck on the return to the stadium! But up at the top, he took ownership of the warming hut and I had trouble getting him out of there! As Chuck suggested, everyone out on the trails is happy and friendly - what a community.

Ulrikeski - We did create a GPX track for the route we intended to take. As for finding Tobermory Cabin, our plan was to follow Tobermory Creek to the Forest Service Road and then follow the road to the Cabin. As it turned out, the Cabin just appeared in front of us about 10m before we reached the road.

MaSid - Although the hydroline route from Elk Lakes to Middle Elk Pass is relatively easy, we find it incredibly boring. The Elkan Creek route is much more interesting even though it involves a lot of trail breaking. And the shade resulted in more sticky snow, but nowhere as bad as it was in Tonermory Creek. You are spot on that our trip time was 7 hours, but that was our moving time! Dad had expected about 6 hours moving time, but the sticky snow slowed us down considerably.

Here's some interesting data from the Little Elbow Summit snow pillow (closest one to WBC) showing that this March we have surpassed last season. Looks like last April was pretty darn good but I can't remember back that far. Shocking how fast the meltdown was in spring though compared to normal.

Had some very good early season skiing, before Christmas, at LL and Cascade. Then it did slow due to low snow coverage, but had sporadic good days at WBC. A few good outings at PLPP too. All and all I would rate the season as good, perhaps have one more trip to PLPP this weekend.

Ulrike: the Tobermory Creek Cabin is pretty much right beside the Forest Service Road at the base of the ridge near where the creek exists the valley towards the Elk River. Unlike some other cabins, hard to miss. Can be driven to in summer.

Indeed. I’m surprised you took the Elkan Creek route back for added trail breaking (although shadier). Skins required for that compared to the hydroline. Close to 7 hrs all told? When my email is back up and running I’ll send you an updated guidebook blurb for the route (there is a section for partially explored routes), and of course reference your potential first recorded circumnavigation and your contribution to exploring the area.
And P.S. It’s getting about that time that the grizzly comes through east elk pass from B.C. and into Alberta. Perhaps the next good freeze of the snowpack. That may have pointed the way better than an otter (assuming he came all the way up tobermory). They like to be efficient, all business, no play.

Well done Mike. Pretty much as expected: some stickiness, more difficult travel lower down (narrower, steeper sides, drainages, deadfall) and some horse trail options. How was the road route back to elk lakes, an old snowmobile track at least?

Ya, the early part of our season was less than stellar. But these late few snow blasts are trying to make up for it.
Seems we had less snow than usual this year. But some areas did quite well. Lake Louise was good I’d say and the Cascade Valley had a great season.
Still, some areas disappointed: Ribbon Creek comes to mind.

Things really shaped up in March with a few key dumps in Kananaskis, pretty much redeeming the season, and we had a good high pressure ridge for a while providing very scenic touring. All memories of the earlier season have been replaced by this. The only real down side to my season was not getting into the elk pass meadows consistently enough, or early, so no Snowfa’s this season as well as less days than normal.

Lookout South descent looks almost unreal. But I know now that if you want to have a comfortable ski down you have to be there right after the last grooming, preferably when the corduroy is just slightly softening up.

A few hardy souls were out skiing today (you could hear them coming, in the AM anyway). Seemed a lot of folk were hiking the mud on the north (sunny) side of the parking lot. Still mostly compact snow and some ice on the hiking trails in the north facing terrain, but the dirt patches are growing. Didn’t use spikes at all. No sign of horses on the horse trails. Potential snow later in the week may mess this up, but hopefully cool enough for continued skiing (touring without grooming). And yes, hats off to the whole team of people that have made this all happen, past and present. It’s been a difficult season.

Good luck! Start in the dark. Bring along a good scraper and some kind of in field glide application. My metal edges attracted a lot of ice off track and in the fresher skier set in the afternoon.

Both were skier set track yesterday. More travel on elk pass trail, but quite mashed up, especially if the walkers from the hut went down the grooming. Hydroline may be a cleaner track.

Hey, we were there, too. We just did Watridge to the bridge. I thought conditions were just great. I guess the groomer did Watridge first yesterday, so it was covered with > 10 cm of fresh snow, so the tracks were skier set in the machine trail. Snow is light and fluffy.
I had a relatively fresh layer of glide on my skin skis, so I didn't have any problems with sticking. My wife was on waxless without any glide and was less than happy during the return around 1400. She had a lot of problems with both catch and release, and icing. Temperature was -6 late in the morning, and the same when we left mid-afternoon.
It was snowing and cloudy most of the time we were there, but when the sun did come out, it quickly affected the snow. Not in a good way.
Walkers and dogs did a number on the first part of the Watridge trail (from the start to the Ursa junction), but there was enough snow that us skiing over the damage should be good enough to fix it. Until the next people come along...
All in all, a really nice time in excellent conditions. It should be great skiing there Saturday!

Yes, the snow crust is very supportive. Note that I was also using classic ski poles with tiny baskets. The baskets did not punch through the thick crust.
But yes, the snowplow descent back down that last hill to Lake Minnewanka was a workout for my legs without metal edged skis!

4-5 cm of new cold snow overnight has refreshed all of the grooming and track setting. Mountain View and Moose Connector were groomed last night. The new snow also hides any dirt or ice patches on south facing hills or thin areas (like on Iron Springs, Hostel and parts of Moose Loop). There is a ski mountaineering race on Mountain Road this morning... maybe they should just use skate skis?

I was at WBC all day. There were scattered flurries, but only about 1 cm of accumulation. That was enough to provide reasonable grip in the classic tracks and smooth glide on gentle terrain. That dusting got scraped off quickly on the steeper, south and west facing hills, which are pretty icy after several very warm and sunny days. Hopefully there is more snowfall overnight… it would sure help.

In addition to Old Grouch’s insight:
Fact: We are in an El Niño cycle, first one since 2016. Meaning: less than normal snow amounts, more days above zero than normal and by a greater amount. This probably makes for challenging grooming conditions, even for the most experienced. For example, between the last two cold/snow events, there was 10 days or more of warm temps, creating a compact snow/ice base which the last snow fell on. The forecasted 30 cm of upslope storm snow didn’t materialize and only got about 10 cm. It was also cold low density snow without much water content. This compacted down to an inch or two and the base snow being icy and hard was not available to add to the mix. Hence the shallow tracks.
They did the best they could with what they had to deal with. Perhaps the issue has more to do with the weather than the groomers. Expectations need to be tempered with reality. Bragg Creek is low elevation foothills and is much more prone to weather variances than higher elevation mountain terrain along the great divide. All things considered, it was pretty good for late March in the foothills and we had a few extra days of skiing in great weather. A bonus I certainly enjoyed without having to drive far. But going farther will be necessary for the rest of the foreseeable season. Enjoy your spring!

Last 3 years, WBC grooming ceased on 03, 18 and 21 Mar so there's nothing unusual about this year. Personally I enjoyed 12 great outings at WBC this winter including a few spectacular days. It's a matter of picking your days, Robbo. And this time of year, spend the money to either buy gas to get to PLPP or LL higher elevation trails or pay for a pass at CNC. No cause for complaint in my books - I'm very thankful for the efforts of the grooming crew although the problems with Nordic Pulse have been disappointing.

"Robbo" it is the end of the season at WBC. The fat biking is impeccable, you should consider having a bike as a back up for marginal skiing conditions. If you want perfect olympic style grooming CNC may be more to your liking. We've had great grooming at WBC all season, maybe you missed those days. Keep in mind that the foothills are prone to melt freeze and all sorts of meteorological variance.

First of all, do NOT venture into badger terrain with sissy carbon fibre BDDs!
I recommend making your own like I do from 1/2" dia (or larger) steel rod:

Use your angle grinder to make a good sharp point. Powder baskets can be fabbed from whatever you have on hand (old shower drain grates work well).
You'll find that the steel has good heft and is malleable enough to be bent back into shape after an encounter.

Both the Horseshoe Ridge Loop, connecting to a re-aligned Tom Snow (moved off of Mountain Road) and a connection to the summer alignment of Mountain View West have been approved in the new WBC Trails Master Plan. The construction depends of getting sufficient donations and grant funding.

Wow, admirable perseverance, Mike. I would've given up. We skied Skogan Pass loop on LT skis a couple of years ago starting from Deadman's Flats over Skogan Pass, down the trackset S side and finished at Kananaskis Village. A friend broke trail on the North side with AT skis the day before, we had fresh snow coverage and a pickup at Kananaskis Village.

It sounds like the ski patroller was talking about the hill whose top is about 1km from the parking lot, and drops down to the Fox Creek junction on the far side. CAN ANYONE PROVIDE FIRST-HAND INFORMATION ABOUT THE CONDITION OF THAT PART OF THE TRAIL?
The patroller apparently said "a larger group had also torn up the TRACKS leading down the hill the other side." But there are no machine-set tracks on that side of the hill because it's too steep. And I'm mystified as to how snowshoes could "tear up" the slope. In any case, that section of the Elk Pass trail is officially shared with snowshoers who have every right to be there, assuming they weren't intentionally wrecking the slope. Ray - Can you provide any clarification?
Snowshoers should not have been on the Elk Pass Trail between the parking lot and the top of the hill, since there's a dedicated snowshoe trail for that section. There are certainly people who knowingly ignore signage and courtesy, including skate skiers who slash the classic tracks and classic skiers who do the same by herringboning up the tracks (sometimes unavoidable on narrow trails or if skiers are coming down right next to them). But others share some of the blame. The ACC goes into great detail about the Elk Lakes Cabin rules and regulations, but provides little information about PLPP rules and regulations, and exactly where the snowshoe route is. The snowshoe trail signs are tiny and not immediately obvious; they could be a lot larger. Likewise for the "trail for skiers only" signs. And on the same signpost should be another sign showing where the snowshoe trail is. I've spoken to both the ACC and Kananaskis Parks about this. The ACC now provides a somewhat better map, but still no info about PLPP rules (such as not leaving leftover food on the Elk Pass picnic table).
GordN - There are indeed volunteer ski patrollers in PLPP.

I am a snowshoer and get so angry when I hear of that my fellow s-shoers have no respect for ski trails. There is a perfectly good snowshoe trail up to Elk Pass along the tree line to the south. Maybe that gang like the look of a nicely packed track rather than having to break trail on the dedicated SS trail. Sheesh. Has there ever been any enforcement of the trail regulations? Sorry your tracks were destroyed.

Yes, it was a really good day out at WBC. I skied some of those same trails and connected them together with a tour across West Meadow and Tom Snow. Expect to see some fresh grooming on Moose Loop by Sunday morning.

After meeting your group a couple of times in passing, it seems that we skied a similar up, down, round, and about route of 14km, but in opposite directions. Agree with your take on conditions, it was very pleasant skiing, with Swix blue extra working perfectly for us.

We started at Nakiska, taking my usual route from the north parking around the back of the lodge area and down past the lowest chairlift to join Skogan. On the way back we went further south on Skogan to see what the “Skogan-Nakiska Connector” was, after noticing it on the map. It’s a good wide trail that took us up to the road opposite the north parking, ungroomed but easy enough to climb. Descending it with the lumpy ice crust would have been challenging on the skinnies. I wonder if it ever gets groomed?

Alf - With all the grooming and tracksetting, I'm wondering why Nordic Pulse is showing that only Elbow S has been groomed? I realize that "live" reporting isn't always possible because of spotty mobile signal access. But compared to previous winters, this winter the grooming seems to be particularly slow in appearing on Nordic Pulse and it's often incorrect. If there's a problem with how to upload the information to Nordic Pulse, I'd be happy to help out. I have lots of IT experience.

My elevation gain showed 760m, and it is supposed to be something like 680, so I calculated to slip back 80 metres. Not too bad for a 18 km trek. Thanks, Helen, great day.

Can confirm! Felt like full-up winter: snow and wind. Tracks were fine, only a few low spots with ice.

AT - Thanks for the reminder about the Badger Pass Tragedy. It should never be forgotten. For the young'uns reading this report, we should clarify that '09 refers neither to 2009 nor 1909, but 1809. The Tragedy was the basis of Rudyard Kipling's 1894 novel The Jungle Book. Personally, I think the impact of the story was lessened by Kipling's decision to base it in India instead of the Rockies.

Mike: a great tale of perseverance. I take it that the embedded skins on the skis were good for the uphills on the icy snow and no full length skins were needed.
Too bad your track is now covered under new snow. Trail breaking required to get to that cabin now!

Thanks Helen! Based on Sporten's skier weight specifications, it looked like 185cm would have been a better fit for me. But Switching Gear didn't have it in that size, and I like the maneuverability of shorter skis such as when floundering in isothermal snow as in the Cuthead Creek photo. I was concerned the 175's would have too much grip and too little glide, but hoped I could compensate by sliding the binding back as far as it would go. In the worst case, I was prepared to shave off some of the skin hairs to improve glide. But the skis worked great with the binding in the centre position.
Although an NNN-BC binding & boot setup would be sturdier for more challenging terrain, the combination of NNN bindings and my Combi boots were more than adequate. And it had the advantage of lighter boots with a moveable binding. For more challenging terrain, I've got the Little B's!
Thanks for the Skogan Pass tip. I haven't been to the pass yet this season, so I might head there tomorrow.

There's an oldtimer around these parts, who as an infant was the sole survivor of the '09 Badger Pass Tragedy (and subsequently raised by wolves).
When asked about it says he'll "never get over Badger Pass".

What an incredible report you wrote.....it was like ready a perfect mystery without the dreaded culprit attacking you at Cuthead Cabin. You got yourself a sweet pair of Sporten skis and am sure those skis never got further than Skoki Cabin in their previous rental life at Wilson's. I did not see them in my visit to Switching Gears a few days ago, but might have been tempted because 175 cms is the sweet length of my Asnes, which are 76-56-66. I prefer the back country binding but heh, you got yourself an awesome pair of skis and with the imbedded skins. Your trip report was entertaining; how you and Sporten Explorer's persevered. I will be searching for a "Badger Pin" at our local Thrift Store, cuz you earned it. BRAVO MIKE W.! Today's perfect conditions at Skogan Pass are screaming out to you!
