Discussion:

Another Rocky Mountain Ramblers (RMRA) outing! The plan was to ski up to Rummel Lake from the Smith Dorrien / Spray Lakes Road / Hwy 762. (Why does the road have 3 names!?) Then explore a bit above the lake along the Rummel Pass trail with a possibility of some turns. Plus a glade report as requested by "Democratize AB"

The temperature was about -5C, but it was mainly cloudy with a cold damp wind blowing, especially at and above the lake. The trail to the lake was uneventful, with hiking and snowshoe traffic in addition to us skiers. After lunch, we tried heading up the Rummel Pass trail. But as soon as we left the shoreline, we would collapse 30-40 cm into the snowpack with each step. We retreated to the only packed trail in the area, which was an old ski track that went along the NW side of the lake. We hoped it would eventually turn upslope toward Rummel Pass but it stopped at the far end of the lake. (photo #2) So back we went to the Rummel Pass trail, where a massive pair of Carbon Dynastar Mythics valiantly led us upslope to treeline! The ski penetration was no better there. We headed a short way up a slope and headed back down, managing a few turns on the way while desperately hoping we wouldn't bottom out on the rocks underneath. (photo #1, #3)

Glade report for "Democratize AB": There were some nice glades below treeline, but the snow still needs to settle to provide a solid base.

Total distance: 13.50 Km
