On Friday, I took my dog for a run in the Mesa Butte area. Starting from the North Fork gate, we headed up the wide cutline that is the start of the Mesa Backdoor route. A snowmobile had recently been driven along the cutline and there was a ton of snow! We made a loop over Mesa Butte where there was much less snow. On Saturday, we returned to ski the cutline! I was VERY surprised to see that someone had snowmobiled the cutline again in the past 24 hours, this time with a grooming attachment! There was a lovely narrow stripe of corduroy all the way north to the nearest official snowmobile trail (about 5km). It was only the width of a snowmobile, very similar to how Bragg Creek grooms their fatbike trails after a bit dump. I don't think snowmobiles are allowed on this cutline other than for well maintenance, but we appreciated it! This way my dog's first time skiing and he loved it, but we'll have to work on keeping him away from my skis! Metal-edged LT skis are not very paw-friendly, and a couple nicks means he is wearing socks of shame for the next few days.
