The Evergreen Seniors Outdoor Club picked PLPP on a perfect day.
Blue skies and lots of sunshine warmed us after a minus 17C start from the Upper Kananaskis Lake parking lot. Twelve skiers in all; we formed two groups of six with separate plans. My group planned to find the recent grooming. We all skied the connector on crisp tracks and corduroy to Elk Pass parking. My group easily climbed the big hill and descended under control on the new grooming. Kick and glide up Elk Pass trail passed quickly for me, with VR40 wax, and we arrived at Elk Pass at noon.
We skied back down the hills on Hydroline>Patterson>Elk Pass>Fox Creek. Glide was great but only moderately fast on ElkPass trail.
New grooming on Fox Creek and Boulton Creek made for easy and safe gliding, however these two trails had the most forest debris. Bark chips, thrown by the busy woodpeckers, and spruce cones were the most significant hazards. The south face slope at Boulton Bridge in full midday sun was difficult.
Wheeler to William Watson Lodge was well groomed and the tracks were in very great condition. The warming snow challenged our waxes on Wheeler but in short time we arrived and boarded the bus back to Calgary. 3:00 pm temperature at WWL I’m guessing was minus 6C.
We found lots of great grooming and tracks. A big thank you to the groomers.
It will all be great again tomorrow, so come on out!
